Atalaya Castle In Huntington Beach State Park

Atalaya Castle is a Spanish Mediterranean style castle built by Archer and Anna Huntington. In years past the Huntingtons lived alone in the castle with servants, rarely entertaining. It is the place where the famous sculptress Anna Huntington had her studio. The stables which held exotic animals used in her sculptures are here for the public to see.

If you visit Atalaya Castle with the idea that you will find a well-restored museum this is not the case. It is more like happening on a deserted castle from another era and although still beautiful with well tended grounds and giant palmettos there is a feeling of being lost.

Often there are volunteers available for guided tours but to experience the full effect of the castle itself go early in the morning, and wander its many winding corridors and cavernous rooms alone. This is a place were magnificent art was created and the creative spirit that still breathes in Atalaya Castle.
